And just like that … I’m on a plane to Santiago, Chile. Yes … WITH A SENSE OF WONDER is back!
Wait, wut? The last blog post of mine that you (may or may not have) read, found me in Koyasan, Japan, 5 days into a 16-day trip. Looking back now at that last post, I see I even teased about an upcoming story on Okunoin Cemetery. But with all of the amazing sights, sounds, and smells of Japan, I realized that finishing the posts would best wait until I returned home. Miyajima Island, Takayama, the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, and good friends. Fabulous trip; great stories. I will circle back and finish up those posts. A few years late, but if you squint it might feel like a few months? Those covid years don’t count, do they?
Life has its own plan. I came home from Japan, packed up my life and moved (back) to Canada. Wonders took a backseat to real life. Then, in March 2019 the world shut down when the Covid Pandemic hit and, like almost everyone else, I stopped traveling. Before long, I retraced my steps and moved back to the US. (If you’re having a hard time keeping up, I understand. Trust me.). And still I didn’t travel. But I did think a lot about traveling; where I wanted to go, why I wanted to travel, and what I wanted to do with this website.
Down the road, With a Sense of Wonder will bring you stories of our global built environment. The stuff that brilliant souls imagined and created to support civilization. Roads, bridges, canals, castles, churches, fortifications, aqueducts. Opera Houses, spas, toilets. Supporting civilization has many faces. The stories are in development (I have 122 different topics on the list so far and I can’t wait to share them with you). Stay tuned.
But in the meantime, I’m back on the road and blogging about my travel experiences. So yes, halfway to Chile. Also Argentina and Uruguay. Please check back for new posts. I hope my stories entertain you. — L
